Hundreds take part in Autism Wessex run at Somerley

Bournemouth

THE New Year got off to a healthy start for hundreds of runners taking part in the annual Autism Wessex winter run.

More than 400 people put their best foot forward for the 10km run around the beautiful Somerley estate, putting those New Year resolutions into practise.

From regular runners to those starting out, the event saw people of all ages take part, raising money to support the Christchurch-based charity.

As well as a 10km route, there was a 2km for families and youngsters.

The picturesque estate near Ringwood provided a stunning backdrop for the runners as they set off.

Members of Littledown Harriers, Poole Runners and other local clubs were involved, with others donning fancy dress to make the most of the last few days of the festive season.

And all the money raised - hoped to be around £5,000 - will be match-funded by Basepoint Business Centre in Bournemouth.

The event was sponsored by Meggitt PLC.

All the runners received a medal and goody bag.

Karen Wilmshurst, advocacy services manager at the charity said: "All the money raised from today goes towards our information and advice service.

"This is the 15th year of the event and its grown so much in popularity over the years.

"It's become a bit of a tradition for some people and gets their New Year off to a great start."

She added: "It is one of our most important events as it raises a great figure for the charity.

"It is also key in spreading the word about Autism Wessex and the work that we do.

"As well as the runners, there are lots of supporters here and they more people know about us, the more people we can help."
