The RSPB is holding Winter Talks so residents can learn about the rich history of Radipole Lake and Lodmoor Nature Reserve

Weymouth

DISCOVER how Weymouth’s Wetlands were once the site of Roman invasions and smuggler's quarrels with a winter talk by the RSPB.

This season, the RSPB will deliver a series of winter talks and slideshow evenings at Weymouth Discovery Centre for residents to learn about the detailed history of the much-used reserves.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has managed Weymouth's two nature reserves- Radipole Lake and Lodmoor- for 40 years although each of the sites carry a rich history pre-dating the charity's involvement.
Dan Bartlett, RSPB senior visitor centre assistant at RSPB Radipole Lake, said: "Did you know that the last recorded skirmish between smugglers and revenue men took place on RSPB Lodmoor?
"Weymouth was one of the first places conquered by the Romans, who navigated their galleons up the river Wey. And though it may seem hard to believe today, horse racing once took place on RSPB Lodmoor, and the site was also used as an airfield at the turn of the century.
"These places certainly have a colourful back-story, which we’d love to share with you.
"Join us for tales about the deadly arrival of the Black Death, damaging floods, how mad King George helped start Weymouth’s tourism industry and examine how man has changed these sites over the years too. We guarantee that after attending this event you’ll see our Weymouth reserves in a whole new light."
The nature reserves, located in the heart of town, offer a breeding ground for kingfishers, otters, marsh harriers, water voles and a host of other species.
Lodmoor is nationally important as the home of the European eel, while Radipole Lake is well-known for the unusual site of sticklebacks, bearded tits, orchids.
The first of three talks will take place on Monday, January 30 from 7pm to 9.30pm followed by another two on Monday, February 27 and Monday, March 20.
Talks cost £2.50 for RSPB members, £4 for non-members, and £2 for under 16s.
Booking is essential and reservation can be made by emailing weymouth.reserves@rspb.org.uk or calling 01305 778313.
