Local SMEs turned out in force at The Newhaven Enterprise Centre’s recent Networking Hub. The popular free business networking event was hosted on Friday 22nd March, and featured top tips in marketing and an insightful talk on how businesses can navigate new health and safety laws.

Guest speaker, Emma Pearce from Pearce Marketing, spoke about how to use QR codes in marketing. She explained that QR codes are an effective way of communicating messages to consumers – often through the use of smart phones or tablet devices – and illustrated examples of it in practice, such as a virtual online shopping poster in Seoul, South Korea by Tesco, which saw 130% increase in sales.

Second guest speaker, John Lawrence from Tennyson Suite, discussed new laws in health and safety, and how it can cost small businesses hundreds of pounds if they’re found to be non-compliant. The ‘Fee for Intervention’ was introduced on 1st October 2012, and if a business is found to be in ‘material breach’ they will be charged £124 per hour until the breach is rectified. In order to avoid this, John gave advice on how to ensure businesses are covered if they get a visit, such as undertaking health and safety training courses.

Roxanne Haid, centre manager at the Basepoint operated business centre, comments: “We were really pleased with the turnout at our recent Networking Hub. Our guest speakers were particularly impressive, and provided some great insight and advice to our attendees. We’re already looking forward to our next event, where we’ll be learning all about improving growth, and winning sales – two important issues for any small business!”

The next Networking Hub is taking place at Basepoint’s Newhaven Enterprise Centre on Thursday 18th April, 12 – 2pm, and will feature guest speaker, Davis Foster from David Foster Associates, who will deliver a presentation on how to improve business growth and sales. Attendees will be provided with lunch and refreshments – all free of charge. To book a place, please email newhaven@basepoint.co.uk  or call 01273 615250.
