Council caretaker in 'catgate' resigns over “final straw” moggie decision

A member of staff at Tewkesbury Town Council has resigned in protest at its decision to ban a cat from its headquarters. The authority made national headlines earlier this year when it emerged it planned to ban Missy from the town hall in High Street. She lives nearby and had made a habit of popping in since the summer of last year. But some councillors have ruled that she poses a health and safety risk and ordered the staff not to let her in. That has angered them because they were fond of her and argued that she improved morale. They even took to calling her their ‘morale officer’ on the council’s website.

Ecotricity wants controversial Tewkesbury gas plant “to lead the way”

Ecotricity has stepped up its bid to build a controversial gas plant near Tewkesbury. Despite opposition from residents and two refusals by the borough council, the Stroud-based company is not giving up on its plans for the site at Fiddington. It had already gone to appeal over the council’s decision to reject its first planning application and now it has also appealed against the authority’s refusal of its second, scaled down, proposal. And Ecotricity has said it wants the Fiddington site to “lead the way” in producing “green gas”. A spokesman said: “We can confirm that we’ve submitted an appeal for our second smaller application for a green gas mill in Fiddington.

You can have a tour at the top of Tewkesbury Abbey tower

Ever wanted to see Tewkesbury from way up high? Well you’re in luck.You can now head to the top of Tewkesbury Abbey’s tower and take in the views of the town. The Abbey has launched tours until mid September, which takes groups of whatever size to the very top. But it’s quite the climb, with 200 steps to get to the top. But the view is more than worth it, with knowledgeable guides on hand to share information about the tower. Explosions during huge fire in Tewkesbury

There was a major fire in Tewkesbury last night. It happened at Redwolf Airsoft, in the Northway Trading Estate, shortly before 11pm. People reported seeing smoke and fire from a long distance away as firefighters tackled the blaze. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Gloucestershire Police were at the scene until this morning.

Praise for DIY SOS-style heroes who revamped popular attraction

Unselfish volunteers sprung into DIY SOS-style action to spruce up an area of Tewkesbury. It might not have been on the scale of the BBC One television show, which sees Nick Knowles and his team transform people’s homes with the help of the public. But the fact that two companies helped to tidy up a popular attraction in the town for free has impressed Tewkesbury in Bloom volunteers.
