Owner of famous Tewkesbury tortoise dies at the age of 49

A man known for owning one of Gloucestershire's most famous pets has died suddenly at the age of 49. Jason Smith was well known in the Tewkesbury area and could often be seen walking his pet tortoise Nancy Drew. Yesterday his wife Kate announced that he had died last month due to heart complications.

How will Santa turn on Tewkesbury Christmas Lights during a pandemic?

The global coronavirus pandemic will not stop the streets of Tewkesbury lighting up for Christmas this year. Things will be very different, however, with no Christmas market in the High Street. Father Christmas and his elves will be on hand to help with a virtual ‘switch on’ to take place on Sunday, November 22 at 4.45pm. There will be a live stream on the Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Facebook page and viewers will be able to leave messages during the video for Father Christmas to read out while sat in his sleigh.

Rare Hummingbird hawk-moth flutters in Tewkesbury woman's garden

A rare species of moth has been spotted fluttering in a Gloucestershire woman's garden. Diane Hall, from Tewkesbury, found the Hummingbird haw-moth in her garden on Sunday afternoon, but was unsure what it was when she first saw it. She said: "I was enjoying the afternoon sun with a cup of tea when I first noticed it. I was not sure if it was a dragonfly at first.

Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey get 'lifesaving' Government money

Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey will get a ‘lifesaving’ financial boost from the Government as part of the £1.57billion Culture Recovery Grant. Across the country, 445 organisations will share £103million to help restart vital repair and maintenance work on cherished heritage sites, to keep venues open and to save jobs and livelihoods. The funding is described by the Government as ‘lifesaving’, with Gloucester History Trust and the Gloucestershire -Warwickshire Steam Railway also receiving funding.
