Massive new factory opposite Starbucks on A46 could create 60 jobs for Tewkesbury

A massive new factory could fill an area of unused land off the A46 near Tewkesbury, creating 60 jobs. Moog, a Tewkesbury based company that builds hydraulic parts for planes, has submitted plans to Tewkesbury Borough Council to build a huge 21,531 square metre manufacturing facility in the town. The site, opposite the BP garage and Starbucks on the A46, would see the company, already Tewkesbury’s largest employer, create an extra 60 jobs. Barberry Industrial, a West Midlands-based development and investment company, controls the site at the A46, near junction nine of the M5. In an off-market deal, it has agreed a pre-let to Moog on a 35-year lease.

The lost tobacco fields of Winchcombe and Tewkesbury

Gloucester’s sole remaining city centre tobacconist Westgate News shut up shop in May in 2006. Not the most important of anniversaries you might say, but it prompted a peek at the near to hand Kelly’s directory for 1968. A quick thumb through reveals that there were 13 tobacconists within a one minute walk of the Cross at that time, among them the splendidly named J & D G Clutterbuck’s in Westgate Street and H & M Detroyat’s in Barton Street. Until a decade before, Barton Street was also the address of tobacconist Alf Bundy. Alf was blinded in the Great War and would have lost his life too had he not been pulled to safety by his brother Bill, who served alongside him in the trenches of northern France. Alf was one of 14 brothers and sisters - Violet, Lilly, Louise, May, Eva, Amy, Gwen, Edna, Winnie, Grace, Bill, Alf, Percy and Harold - and the family lived in Tredworth Road.

The theatre was designed by architect Frank Matcham who was also responsible for the London Palladium and built in just six months. Ellen Terry, George Robey, John Gielgud, Margot Fonteyn and numerous luminaries have performed on its stage and the first talkie film seen in Cheltenham was screened at the theatre. This event took place in October 1929 and allowed local audiences to hear what Ronald Coleman’s voice sounded like as he played the part of Bulldog Drummond.
